Product Care

Caring for apparel

In general, we recommend machine washing your apparel in cold water with similar colours, without using bleach or fabric softener. Tumble dry on low heat and remember never to use dryer sheets. We also recommend that to keep your apparel in good condition, you can use a garment bag. This means your clothing is protected from snags caused by Velcro®, eye hooks, or other sharp objects that can be found on other clothing.

Suede or leather shoes require suede or leather cleaner respectively. For best results, always follow the instructions provided with the cleaning product.

WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN CLEANING SHOES

  • Washing in the washing machine:The fabric of the shoes may be damaged or discolored in the washing machine. For this reason, New Balance does NOT recommend washing shoes in the washing machine and products washed in the washing machine are OUT OF WARRANTY. Washing shoes, especially walking and running shoes, in the washing machine may cause the sole material to absorb water and lose its technological properties such as cushioning and shock absorption.
  • Drying your shoes with heaters: Shoes can change shape with heat, so they should always be dried at room temperature.
  • Using chemicals: Chemicals and bleach can damage the delicate material on the shoe.
  • Using a stiff brush or scrubbing hard: The brush can damage the material or leather of the shoe.

Caring for bags

First, use a dry brush to remove any excess dirt and mud. Use a mild detergent and warm water to remove any stains with a sponge or towel. To dry, don’t put your bag on a heater, simply air dry at room temperature.

Caring for caps/hats

First, use a vacuum brush attachment to clean off any dirt or dust. To wash the cap by hand, wet it in the shower or sink using cool water (unless the tag says otherwise, always check first) without letting it get too soaked. Next, apply shampoo or a mild detergent to a nail brush or soft toothbrush and scrub the cap clean. Rinse the residue off thoroughly (remembering not to soak the cap too much). For nylon or knit baseball caps, you can soften the fibers by mixing a few drops of conditioner in a pitcher or bucket filled with water and the water to rinse the cap after it is clean. When you are finished cleaning the cap, set it on a bowl, a balled-up towel, an inflated balloon, or a hat stand. This helps it to maintain its shape while air drying. Don’t use a dryer for your caps, this can cause them to shrink.

Caring for shoes

The suggested cleaning method for New Balance athletic shoes is to use a light bristle brush (an old toothbrush works well) and a mild detergent (either dishwashing or laundry). Be sure to use a detergent free of dye to avoid staining. If you’re unsure, we recommend carrying out a spot check with the detergent to ensure no staining will occur. Scrub the shoes with the brush and use a damp cloth to wipe them clean. Then allow the shoes to thoroughly air dry for 24 hours. To eliminate and prevent shoe odor, use a shoe deodorizer spray. Putting shoes through a washing machine cycle is NOT recommended, as some shoe materials should not be exposed to heat or submerged in water. Be sure that any cleaning product you purchase and plan to use is silicone-based to prevent any possible damage to your shoes. Suede or leather shoes require suede or leather cleaner, respectively. For best results, always follow the instructions included with the cleaning product.
